Dear Global Business Enthusiast,

Michael Michelini (@michelini) here. You’re getting this email because you requested my periodic thoughts on international business from Hong Kong.

[Edit: Actually, it’s possible that you’ve never gotten an email from me. Somebody might have just given you the link to this page, which is an online archive of an email that I sent to folks who had asked for it. This week: drone deliveries, moon delays, China doesn’t make fakes?, and more

Happy July 4th – independence day in America, Happy July 1 – 20 years of the Hong Kong handover to Mainland China, 2 historical events – one about separation, one about, let’s say “joining”. And to add a twist to it, we did a campaign you can check out here that we sent out a couple days ago.

GFA Pulse Number 129

When drone first was invented, I was always thinking of how it would deliver my e-commerce orders. And now, SF has already made it a reality! I thought this would be like 10 years away – But seems soon the drone will take over delivery guys sooner!
SF Express gets green light for drone package deliveries

Well this ruins my plan of moving to moon sooner. In contrast with the drone deliveries exceeding my expectation, this news just set me back from my moon target. Don’t worry, we’ll still go in our lifetime.
China’s most powerful rocket failed yesterday. What does that mean for the country’s space plans?

Pretty funny article as Shanghaiist links to tons of articles of fake product stories:

July First was the 20th anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong to Mainland China from the British – so, here we go:
A big chunk of news here, but showing it all in the newsletter so you can’t say you missed this July 1st news
In a surprise announcement, China’s Foreign Ministry said the agreement between China and the UK was no longer relevant or binding.
“Now Hong Kong has returned to the motherland’s embrace for 20 years, the Sino-British Joint Declaration, as a historical document, no longer has any practical significance, and it is not at all binding for the central government’s management over Hong Kong,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said.
“The UK has no sovereignty, no power to rule and no power to supervise Hong Kong after the handover.”

And while Hong Kong has its struggle, Shenzhen continues to soar.
I don’t know about you, but living in Shenzhen for last 10 years make me feel this is a super old headline. I hear it over and over again that Shenzhen is the next Silicon Valley and if you guys have ever been here, you will know what I am talking about:
Shenzhen Will Replace Silicon Valley

Shenzhen is offering ‘Female-Priority’ Subway Cars!!! Although the media loves it, I’ve heard a lot of my female friends complain to me that it does not actually make a difference and dudes are still filling up the train cars. Well, like anything else – it takes time? What do you think, will dudes really stay out of the female only subway train cars?

Shenzhen’s New ‘Female-Priority’ Subway Cars a Total Bust?

And the live streaming matures to a full blown business:
woah, didn’t know that they have agents, agencies, workplaces for live streaming influencers.. (I thought only cam stars would be that organized)
