Dear Global Business Enthusiast,

Michael Michelini (@michelini) here. You’re getting this email because you requested my periodic thoughts on international business from Hong Kong.

[Edit: Actually, it’s possible that you’ve never gotten an email from me. Somebody might have just given you the link to this page, which is an online archive of an email that I sent to folks who had asked for it. If you’d like to get articles like this in your inbox, totally free, about once a week or two, give me your email address.]

Quite a bit of you are on the move right now in China or Hong Kong, going to trade shows, visiting factories, getting your Asia business done before going back to your home countries. I understand if you’re too busy to read this one, or skim it while walking the trade show!

Anyone who has traveled in Hong Kong must have used an “Octopus” MTR card before? It’s used as a digital wallet already – using it at convenient stores, utilities and more. Now its expanding with Standard Charter to be able to be used to transfer between friends! Also you will be able to max the card’s balance out at 3,000 HKD

And of course, any news I get about Hong Kong banks I add to our newsletter…. Here’s a good one explaining why they may not want your business.

I wonder if any women in Beijing took me as a foreign spy? New government campaign warns Chinese women foreign men may be posing to get trade secrets:

To Beijing with love: Chinese security poster warns of ‘dangerous’ handsome foreign spies who steal hearts – and secrets

And an odd article to counter that argument, saying women in Hong Kong would rather die alone than to marry a HK man.
