Looking to find that magic supplier in China? Have been digging in Global Sources and Alibaba for months and still at a loss?

Let us help! We have been in China in the one decade mark and have seen everything there is to see in the China sourcing game!

Take Some Of The Ease Off Your China Factory Searching

We remember the early days searching online from America to find that perfect supplier in China. It would make all our pains just wash away. They would have every SKU in our current inventory, no MOQ, and ship on demand to us.

Boy, we had quite a roller coaster ride with that mindset!

Working with products from home and decor to electronics, even some experience with bananas from Ecuador (ya, long story, we can chat about it if you’re curious). So feel free to bring any questions you have about your specific products. Just make sure to tell us before the call in the application process so we can direct you to the right sourcing expert.

It is best to instead take a step back and look at your product line, industry, and future goals of your business. Whether you are an online seller or a traditional distributor, making sure you have a long term and stable manufacturer is critical to your long term success.

So maybe at the beginning you started with a few wholesalers in America and now are taking it to the next level. But instead of trying to find everything you need that matches exactly what you have, it may be more long term to instead be flexible to adapt to what your factories can supply.

This is just one example of how we can help when you work with us.

What About Reverse Engineering A Product You Have?

Why do the hard work over? If you’re buying from a wholesalers or other importer, you may have ways you can reverse engineer where it came from.

For years we searched online for the right product, until we figured out that there are ways to find out exactly the factory our competitors are buying from.

This is a strategy we can cover for you if you’re interested. Its best if the product is already on the market and well established.

Your shipments and customs clearance process

Are you doing all the logistics correct? Maybe it’s working, but there are some hassles with it? Smooth out this operation so you can focus on your more important task – building your brand and building your sales!

We will go through the steps required for importing and exporting, breaking down the below confusing bill you may get from your customs broker:

Want to better understand all those charges on your customs bill? Costs below are for example purposes only!

INBOUND H/C: (handling charge) $65.00
DUTY: depends on product type(s) refer to the Harmonized Tariff Code (HTC)
MPF Merchandise Processing Fee: 0.21% OF COMMERCIAL INVOICE VALUE (MIN:$25.00)
HMF – Harbor Maintenance Fee: 0.125% OF COMMERCIAL INVOICE VALUE
DDC Charge – Delivery Destinations Charge
Or as one of our first customs broker put it

Handling Charge = 65.00 – flat fee

DDC Charge? = 34.26 – Delivery Destinations Charge

Customs Clearance Fee = 100 it’s a fee for no matter how big the shipment

Bond = 55.00 it’s base on your invoice Dollar amount , but the minimum is $55

Import Duty = 188.70 – this is the customs fee to the government, correct? (yes, it is duty tax to government)

MPF/HMF = 31.38 – what is this? is this a flat fee or variable? It’s Merchandise Processing Fee and Harbor Maintenance Fee.

Mentioned in 42 Rules for Sourcing and Manufacturing in China

Michael Michelini, the CEO of Shadstone Limited is a contributor to the book “42 Rules for Sourcing and Manufacturing in China

The book is a practical handbook for doing business in China, special economic zones, factory tours and manufacturing quality

Doing business in China is tougher than you think. Not only is the culture vastly different, but China’s experience in manufacturing is still developing. It will be a few years before the majority of manufacturers are up to world standards. In the meantime, quality, contract laws, schedules and logistics must be closely monitored. As a result, the things Westerners must do to be successful are far different from dealing with American or European manufacturers. The best way to quickly come up to speed on these differences and how to handle them is to learn from the experience of others.

Through over 20 extraordinary executive interviews, Rosemary Coates captured the essence of sourcing and manufacturing in China. ’42 Rules for Sourcing and Manufacturing in China’ is a pragmatic approach that every businessperson headed to China must read.

Michael Michelini is the CEO of Shadstone and an American entrepreneur living and working in shenzhen, china. He has a passion for internet marketing and connecting the internet to people, learning Chinese culture and building global supply chain networks, mainly between the U.S. and China. Prior to moving to China, Michelini held operations and trader positions at Deutsche Bank in New York. Mike earned a BS in Engineering and an MS in Management and an MS in Technology, both from Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, New Jersey.

Rapid Prototyping

Shadstone Sourcing has a lot of contacts of quality suppliers for your rapid prototyping needs! One of which is Star Prototype China. Based right in China to help you get the samples you need, fast and reliable!

Stereolithography SLA and Selective Laser Sintering SLS rapid prototyping techniques are mainstream in western countries, but in China CNC machining of prototypes is still the most prevalent form of rapid prototyping. The reason for this is that the cost of labour, materials and CNC machinery is very low in China. There are more than 2,000 modelmaking companies in China that do CNC machining of rapid prototypes, but only one is run by a westerner who understands western standards.

Vacuum Casting of PU

Star Prototype uses Axson Resins to make vacuum cast prototypes. Click here to see a list of Axson resins available in China. Models can be painted or self coloured, self textured. Typically, vacuum castings are about half the price of suppliers in the west. Gordon Styles has been involved in vacuum casting and rapid prototyping since 1993 when he was owner of STYLES RPD in the UK. Star-Prototype uses China made vacuum casting machines and many of the resins are also made in China: this keeps the cost very low. Star Prototype also has a very different way of making silicone moulds. Because the cost of labour is so low, we can afford to make the silicone mould in two separate pourings, as opposed to the single pour process generally used in the west. This ensures that our split line is very accurate. It also ensures that we do not get bubble entrapment against the underside of the model during the pouring process.

Hard Finished SL or SLS

If you need your Stereolithography SLA or Selective Laster Sintering SLS models finishing to a very high level, then we can be half the price of the west. Our cost of labour is 10% of the west, therefore our finishing costs are negligible compared to the cost of the SL or SLS model. We guarantee to give you a fully finished model for the same price as a raw model in the west. So why is our SL and SLS nearly the same price as the west? Only about 5% of modelmaking in China is done by SL or SLS compared with 65% in the west. The RP machines in China are either locally made and low efficiency, or western made and in poor repair. They are not loaded efficiently because demand is low; the western machines cost more to buy in China than in the west; and the raw materials cost more to buy in China. Before setting up Star Prototype, Gordon Styles ran two rapid prototyping companies in China and learnt which processes were the best value for money. Star Prototype uses SL as the master pattern making process for making silicone moulds for the vacuum casting process. Star Prototype uses SLS rapid prototype models for very complicated parts that must be made in a single piece.
